Multiple studies over the last decades have found there is a serious and concerning link between animal abuse and family violence; the two acts often go hand in hand. By assisting individuals fleeing family violence our Pet Safekeeping Program is reducing the risk of animal abuse and neglect.
- Animals often enter into the program in an emergency scenario; there is often little notice prior to entry into the program.
- The animal(s) receive a standard medical exam and must be in good health before placing them in temporary accommodations, your facility would need to have the capacity to house animal’s short term – just until they have all of the required medical care.
- All animal(s) in care will receive a general check-up, full vaccinations, spay/neuter and pest treatment.
- The Alberta SPCA covers costs of all basic treatment and medical procedures deemed necessary for the well-being of the animal(s) in care.
- Animals may enter the program who have suffered direct or non-direct abuse. The clinic staff must be able to treat these scenarios appropriately, while maintaining the upmost level of confidentiality.
- Safety and confidentiality is expected.

Boarding Facilities
The range of animal(s) taken into our program is large and diverse. We quite often assist individuals who have the standard dog and cat. However, we also take in birds, reptiles, small animals and even the occasional pet fish. We know that no one facility is able to accommodate this wide variety of species, however we seek out the best care available for the large array of species who do need us. No facility is too big or too small to join our network of agencies and assist us.
- Animals often enter into the program in an emergency scenario; there is often little notice prior to entry into the program.
- Animals are brought into the program under a standard 21 day stay. Each circumstance is unique and some may be in the program much shorter or longer than 21 days.
- The costs associated with the animal(s) stay is covered fully by the Alberta SPCA.
- Due to the confidentiality of our service, your business cannot advertise or inform individuals that you are a part of our Pet Safekeeping Program. Any animal(s) in care are to remain confidential and any communication regarding the animal(s) will be done through a Pet Safekeeping Coordinator.
Humane Societies / SPCAs
Collaborating with humane societies and SPCA’s in Alberta is important to our Pet Safekeeping Program. When individuals do not know where to turn with their pets, you are often the first point of contact. Humane societies and SPCA’s also already have the boarding capability and a clear plan for veterinary care. We are open to discussing unique program opportunities across the Province of Alberta.
- Animals often enter into the program in an emergency scenario; there is often little notice prior to entry into the program.
- All animal(s) in care will receive a general check-up, full vaccinations, spay/neuter and pest treatment.
- All animal(s) receive any medical procedures deemed essential to their well-being and overall health.
- The costs associated with the animal(s) medical treatment(s) and boarding stay are covered fully by the Alberta SPCA.
